Evolving Characters With Engaged Author Julie Arduini

ENGAGED is my third and final book in the Surrendering Time series. Each book takes an element of time and adds a surrender theme to it, as well as a mention or two about chocolate. ENTRUSTED was about surrendering the present as Jenna and Ben work on letting go of fear, loss, and change. ENTANGLED was about surrendering the past as Carla had to break through re living her regrets. ENGAGED is about surrendering the future. Trish Maxwell has to replace her dreams with God’s plan, something that’s difficult when she has no plan but the dreams she focused on.
What I loved about ENGAGED was I was able to create a heroine that was the “bad girl” from ENTRUSTED. In Book 1, Trish was in New York City living the dream. When she returns, she’s still got a chip on her shoulder regarding her hometown. It’s a place she never wanted to be, and she left quickly without saying goodbye. Jenna’s new in town and has the job Trish used to have, and is much better at it. Trish also sees her ex boyfriend, Ben Regan, has his eye on Jenna. It wasn’t hard to make Trish the mean girl.
By the time ENGAGED starts, everything has changed for Trish. The job ended as abruptly as it started and she has nothing else to fall back on. She’s forced to move back to Speculator Falls to live with her parents and work at the department store. Even worse, she has to face the many people she angered when she left. She’s been humbled, her confidence is shaken, and she realizes she burned a lot of bridges. What was a neat surprise was of all the new friends for Trish to have in this book, it’s Jenna who advocates and believes in her.
Trish wasn’t the only character I changed up a bit. Throughout the series, Kyle Swarthmore was the city mogul with his eyes on Speculator Falls. Although he grew up summers there just as Ben had, Kyle’s perspective is different. His dad wants him to buy up the land and commercialize it. Speculator Falls residents are protective, they’ve seen the results when that’s been done in other places like Lake George, and they want to keep their village the pioneer land it’s been known for. Kyle’s torn, because the longer he stays, the more he feels a connection to the people. His dad’s influence has a far reach, and although we never meet Kyle’s father, his presence follows Kyle. I was proud of how between Trish and Kyle, there was improvement in them as the series progressed.
ENGAGED is out now for Kindle, and coming soon for print. If you follow my page on Amazon, you’ll be notified when I have a new release.
Is there a character that you recall that experienced a change as a series moved forward? It can be in a book, movie, or TV show. I’d love to hear from you!

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas?

We are in full blown summer here in my neck of the woods in Texas, and it's hibernation time.  You know what I mean. When the temperature creeps up to over a 100 degrees and its not fit for man nor beast outside most of the day.

When things get hot here in the Alford house, my thoughts naturally drift off to cooler times. And when I think of cooler weather, well, I think of Christmas.

And when I think about Christmas, I find myself wanting to start making Christmas decorations.

So today, I though I'd share some of my favorite craft ideas for the upcoming the Christmas season.

I love this idea because it seems easy enough and you can add lights to it, giving it a special look.

Not sure if I can pull this one off or not. But I'm looking forward to trying it.

This is one of my favorites from last year. The melting snowman. I think it would be fun to make with the granddaughters.

And this sign that pretty much defines the meaning of Christmas for me.

So what about you? What's your favorite way to decorate for Christmas...even if its only July.

All the best...

MY REVIEW:

Welcome back to Slippery Rock, Missouri. A small town where everyone knows everyone, including their secrets.
One thing I love about a book series is that it allows you to return to your favorite place and find out what’s happening to some of your favorite townsfolk.
Such is the case with REBEL IN A SMALLTOWN, where author Kristina Knight takes us back to Slippery Rock, Missouri and this time, we get to read Sheriff James Calhoun’s story.
James has been crazy about Mara Tyler since they were teenagers, where Mara had a reputation of being one for getting into mischief, which eventually was the cause of her leaving town.
A romantic tryst between the two some years later, results in a baby that James knows nothing about.
Now, Mara is back in town and trying to redeem herself and prove to the town and herself that she’s not the rebel everyone believes her to be, which is more difficult than Mara thought.
As the romance between James and Mara reignites, both struggle to overcome their preconceived notions of each other and find their happily ever after. And what a happily ever after it is.
While there are some adult situations in the book, it’s an entertaining small town read that makes me look forward to Ms. Knight’s next Slippery Rock book.

Introducing Author Julie Arduini’s June Release: ENGAGED

When There’s No Plan B

About Julie Arduini’s June Release: ENGAGED

When I wrote book one in my Surrendering Time series, ENTRUSTED, Trish Maxwell was in New York City fulfilling a dream job. Although Trish spent time in Speculator Falls, she made it clear that she resented the Adirondack mountain community. Of all the characters in the village, Trish definitely was not the nicest.

Fast forward and in book three, ENGAGED, Trish is the heroine. She’s back in Speculator Falls without a career, living with her parents. Life has not worked out like she planned. More than not having her dream job, she left her hometown in a hurry without saying goodbye to hardly anyone. The senior citizens she used to take care of at the senior center are angry. Her ex-boyfriend eventually got over his hurt and married the girl who replaced her at the senior center. Trish returns home with no friends and no prospects in her field.

Trish’s mom offers her a job at the department store she manages, and as Trish mingles throughout the community asking forgiveness of those she hurt by leaving with a superior attitude and without saying goodbye, they all ask the same thing---what’s next? She realizes her education and dreams were all invested in getting an events planning job in New York City. She has no idea what comes next.

ENGAGED has been fun to write and explore the theme of finding commitment when there is no Plan B. Trish gets in all sorts of predicaments as she tries to forge a new path as someone who can be trusted to stick around. When she meets paramedic Wayne Peterson, she also has to take him and his son into consideration as she decides what she wants to do. The department store isn’t a passion for her, but it’s close to home and helps her family. Creating window displays throughout the Adirondacks is something she loves, but it would require a lot of marketing, travel, and fundraising. And the bright lights of New York City haven’t completely dimmed for her. Trish has a lot on her plate as she discovers who she is and what she’s supposed to do.

I remember as a new college graduate, I was certain my adult life was going to be in Rochester, New York in public relations. Each resume I sent out was with visions of what my apartment would look like, who my colleagues would be. Not long after graduation I became a Christian, and even so new in faith, I realized doors were closing for my dream. Not only did I not end up in Rochester, I was back in my hometown, living at home. When I did get a job, it wasn’t as much publicity as it was human services. Only God knew that the job would be a decade long ministry adventure where I placed senior citizens fifty-five years and older into not for profit volunteer positions. That plan not only gave me many grandparents after never having any growing up, it gave me a delightful blend of characters you see in the Surrendering Time series.

Does Trish ever find what she’s meant to do? Can she be grateful for the death of her dream and exchange it for God’s plans? Well, you need to read ENGAGED to find out. I believe you’ll enjoy her story, available on Amazon June 26.

How about you? Have you ever had to exchange your dreams for God’s plans? I’d love to hear your story!

MY REVIEW:

I loved reading the other K-9 series books by Kate James, and so I was excited for the opportunity to read HOME TO STAY. This story didn’t disappoint. It was an emotional rollercoaster ride.
What would you do if you woke up one morning and found your child missing? For Sawyer Evans, this is his reality. His son Dylan has gone missing while on a camping trip. Sawyer’s frantic fearful search for his son leaps off the pages. His emotions raw and gripping. I could put myself in his place and it was terrifying.
K-9 rookie officer Shannon Clemens is called in, with her sweet dog Darwin, to search for the boy. Sawyer’s missing son reminds Shannon of a child that didn’t come home and she is determined that Dylan’s story will have a different ending.
Through all the twists and turns this story will take you on, you’ll be on the edge of your seat as the search for Dylan goes in unexpected directions and brings up question after question. Who really took Dylan?
Kate James has weaved a wonderful story, filled with heartache and fear…and love. When these two wounded people come together to bring Dylan home, they will have you cheering for them to have a happy ending of their own throughout the entire book. I would highly recommend HOME TO STAY and the rest of the K-9 series.

MY REVIEW

This story was such an amazing journey for me. Filled with rich characters, precious children, a wounded past, and best of all…forgiveness and a second chance at love.
THE RENEGADE’S REDEMPTION was impossible to put down. I read the entire book in one sitting, it’s that good.
Ravena is a strong woman who is trying to keep the family farm going by herself as well as fulfill a promise she made to her grandfather to take care of five orphans. When her hired hand quits on her, Ravena realizes she needs help to plow the field and plant crops. But she never expected the help to come from the man she once loved and who stood her up. Tex show up in her life once more wounded from a gunshot, when the orphans find him unconscious.
Although Tex has never stopped loving Ravena, he believes he is no good for her after his outlaw past. Once Ravena bandages him up, Tex agrees to help her out. But the more time he spends with Ravena, the more he realizes he wants to stay with her forever. Unfortunately, Tex’s past haunts him, and he turns himself in, but the ending of the rest of the story is nothing what I expected. I loved how the author brought all the pieces of the puzzle together to make a pleasing ending.
This story was such a delight to read. I loved the hero and heroine and was cheering for them the whole time. I would recommend this story to anyone who loves a happy ending. I will definitely check out more stories by this author.
